Moderate 5.0-Magnitude Quake Hits off Indonesia

A moderate 5.0-magnitude earthquake hit off the Indonesian island of Sumatra early Monday, seismologists said, but there were no immediate reports of damage or tsunami warnings issued.

The undersea quake struck at 4:14 am (21:14 GMT Sunday) at a depth of 39 kilometres (24 miles) around 100 kilometres southwest of Banda Aceh in northern Sumatra, the US Geological Survey said.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where the meeting of continental plates causes high seismic activity, and Sumatra is particularly prone to earthquakes.
